A lava lamp that keeps time

Switch the lamp on and the wax slowly warms at the bottom, stretches upward, cools near the top and drifts back down, over and over. It never quite repeats, which is what makes a lava lamp so easy to watch.

For the last stretch of your time the lamp cools down: the wax moves more slowly, then sinks and settles at the bottom right as the countdown reaches zero. Pick a wax colour, and turn on the lamp sound for a soft hum with the odd bubble.

Good for

  • Study sessions and homework
  • Pomodoro focus blocks
  • Winding down in the evening
  • Reading time
  • A calm screen for a classroom work period

Who it’s for

  • Teachers and classrooms. Put the lava lamp timer on the projector or smartboard for transitions, centers, tests and clean-up time. It’s easy to read from the back of the room.
  • Kids and parents. Seeing time drain away makes waiting easier to understand than numbers alone, for routines like brushing teeth, screen time or getting ready.
  • ADHD, autism and visual thinkers. A visual timer shows time passing instead of just counting it, which many people find easier to follow and less stressful.
  • Students. Study sessions, homework sprints and timed exam practice, with a calm visual instead of a ticking clock.
  • Meditation, yoga and relaxation. A quiet, soothing timer for breathing exercises, stretching or winding down.
  • Work and focus. Pomodoro blocks and focused work sessions, with a mini window that floats over your other apps.

Questions

Is the lava lamp timer accurate?

Yes. The countdown is exact, and the lamp starts cooling for the last part of your time so the wax settles as the timer hits zero.

Can I use it as a Pomodoro timer?

Yes. Turn on Pomodoro rounds and it runs 25 minutes of focus, then a 5-minute break, four times over, with a longer 15-minute break after the fourth round. A fresh scene starts with each focus round, and the browser tab shows the time left so you can see it from other tabs.

Does it keep running in another tab?

Yes. The timer counts real time, so it stays correct while you switch tabs, and the chime still plays when time is up.

Is the wax really simulated?

Yes. Each blob of wax has its own temperature. It warms near the bulb, rises, cools near the top and sinks, and blobs merge and split as they pass each other.

Is it free?

Yes. No account, no download, and no pop-ups.
